This is the only print among the seven in Kollwitz’s "War" portfolio that doesn’t focus on those left behind in war. Instead, this print features the event that precipitates the tragedy embodied in the other six: the youth sent into battle. The figure second from left, following Death, is modeled after Kollwitz’s son Peter, who was killed two months after he enlisted.
