Recent Acquisitions for the Museum of Art Collection

In times of transition, an institution’s beliefs and values are measured not only by their adaptability to the necessities of change but by what, at their core, remains resolute. The art collection of Grinnell College has been growing almost since the beginning, when an education grounded in the humanities was considered essential to an individual’s soundness of mind and being, and also to the health, vibrance, and sustainability of society as a whole. Primary-source experience and inquiry of works of art — not just of their written history and reproduced images — are still vital to, and a distinguishing feature of, a Grinnell education, and continue to form the core mission of the Grinnell College Museum of Art.

Since the early days, and emboldened by the opening of this remarkable space in 1999, purchases of art from endowed funds as well as gifts from alumni and friends of the College have enriched the collection’s representation of artists in all media from this country and around the world. The uncertainty of the past three years has had little impact on this expanding diversity and growth. In the visual arts, as in the human creative impulses at their heart and in the heart of every Grinnellian, the supply chain is not an issue.

In celebration of President Anne Harris’s inauguration; in honor of the stalwart classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022, who have humbled us with their grace and prevailing spirit; and in embrace of the many classes of faithful and generous alumni returning this summer for long-delayed reunions, we are proud to present these recent additions to our collection, which will sustain and enrich the College’s mission for generations of future Grinnellians, nimble yet steadfast astride the changing times.
