From Kelekian's Vault: a Selection of Rare and Exceptional Art is a complement to the Fragmentary Visions exhibit, which is curated by the Fall 2022 Exhibition Seminar students and currently on viewup in the Grinnell College Museum of Art Faulconer Gallery, located in Bucksbaum Center for the Arts. It From Kelekian's Vault also utilizes the college’s Kelekian collection acquired through the generous donations of Nanette Rodney Kelekian, the granddaughter of influential art collector and dealer Dikran Kelekian. What makes this exhibition stand out from Fragmentary Visons, however, is that From Kelekiam's Vault presents meticulous research on the acquisition history of the objects exhibited.The Grinnell College Museum of Art’s historic paper work about shines light on the close and extraordinary relationship Ms. Kelekian had with both Grinnell College as an institution and its faculty.
Our Kelekian collection is no less fascinating than those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Walters Museum, and Harvard Art Museums which are among other institutions Ms. Kelekian have made donations to. It is thus no suprise that the Kelekian collection facilitated the establishment of Grinnell's campus art museum in 1999—now also known as the Faulconer Gallery.
This exhibition aims to acquaint the Grinnell community with the richness of the Kelekian collection and showcase how the diversity of the works transcend categorical restrictions. Housing a wide array of works from Urartian bronze plaques of 8th century to modern German prints, From Kelekian's Vault is a microcosm of the way Kelekians have consciously documented the history of the world through their collecting practices.
